Today is a day to celebrate ourselves, all of us Irish women all over the world. We have created a Christmas of blessings, fun and good food for our families. We agonised over presents, made multiple lists, cooked turkeys and hams, went to bed late and got up early to share in the joy of Santa's arrival. We put aside our private griefs. We wrote Christmas cards to loved ones far away and tried not to cry on long distance phonecalls. We visited our family graves and left wreaths and flowers. We told stories of family members no longer with us so that their memory will never be forgotten. We remembered everyone.

Now today is for us! No cooking or cleaning for others. We will meet with women friends and family members. We might have "a small complaints department" meeting. But that will soon pass. Then we will treasure our blessings and speak of ourselves and our hopes for this New Year. We will gather our strength, like our mothers and grandmothers did, and we will face the year determined to do the very best for our families once again. Watch out world! Here we come!
