Maurice Lawlor, born c1792, resident at Fenit Within 1853

1/19/2021

According to Griffiths Valuation, Maurice Lawlor and his family were resident at Fenit Within in 1853. Maurice was a tenant of Miss S A E Locke. Anyone researching the Lawlor family is in luck because an application was made for a pension  on behalf of this family in 1917. The details recovered from a search of the 1851 Census, included the following:

Maurice Lawlor born c 1792
wife Catherine, born c1795, married 1814
children
Patt b c1821
John b c1826
Maurice b c1828
David b c1836
Daniel b c1847
Mary b c1824
Ellen b c1831
Catherine b c1835
Edmund b c 1833
A search of the microfilms for Ardfert Parish might yield baptismal confirmation for these people.

Picture
Census Search Forms 1851: Search conducted 1917

Though the applicant is simply named as 'the Lawlor family' a search of the 1911 Census for Tawlaght provides only one person with the surname Lawlor who would have been eligible for an old-age pension, Norry Lawlor aged 73, a widow living with her two sons Pat and Ned. Norry is an abbreviation of Hanora, which is also sometimes recorded as Hannah. Pat and Ned are both fishermen. Pat was born in London, England. A search of transcribed Church records, yields the baptism of Edmund/Ned Lawlor of Taulaght on 22 Jul 1876. His parents are named as Maurice Lawlor and Hannah Sullivan. John Lawlor, another son of this couple was baptised on 31 Aug 1873 and David Lalor baptised on 3 April 1870.
It seems likely that this Maurice Lawlor born c1828, is the son of Maurice Lawlor born c1792. Maurice died in 1879 and his age is recorded as 50.

Kate Sheahan Stack, Liscahane and Banna Mountain

Catherine Sheahan married Thomas Stack, son of Thomas Stack, Banna Mountain, on 21 May 1871. Kate (Catherine) was the daughter of Johnanna Griffin and Thomas Sheahan of Liscahane, Ardert. I found this when I checked the Census Search forms at censussearchforms.nationalarchives.ie

We all know how difficult it can be to find the Mother's maiden name and how important it is when the father's name is relatively common. The Census Search Forms sought to establish a persons residence in 1851 and is one source we can use in the absence of the 1851 Census itself.
In 1853 ,Thomas Sheehan of Liscahane, Ardfert, was indeed renting land (upon which he had a house and outbuildings) from Sir Edward Denny with a Rateable Valuation of £25. 5 shillings according to Griffith's Valuation.
In 1901, there was 127 people living in Liscahane of whom 10 were Sheahans, Thomas age 55 and his wife Mary Stack originally of Banna and their children. They married 5 Feb 1870 in Ardfert. Their fathers were Thomas Sheahan and Thomas Stack. Is it possible that a Stack brother and sister married a Sheahan brother and sister?

It is interesting to note that on Census day they had a visitor called Lizzie Stack age 18 and that Kate & Tom Stack had a daughter Elizabeth aged 18.

In Merchant Princes~The Remarkable Story of Tralee's Milling Families, Vincent O'Mahoney describes the rise of the Tralee families  Donovan, Latchford, McCowen, and Kelliher from 1800 up to 2016. The sources of the book are many newspaper articles, previously unseen archival material. diaries, letters and family photographs. This book also takes us through the life of the town of Tralee, before and after The Great Hunger (An Gorta Mor), through WW1, the War of Independence, the Civil War, the formative years of the Irish Free State and WW2.
The Historical Timeline at the end of the book is invaluable to anyone researching any Tralee family as it places the lives of our ancestors in the context of international and local events at the same time.
Researchers with any connection to these families or the town of Tralee may also discover members of their own families mentioned. On page 261, I found a reference to my late father Michael Brennan's work in the development of the Russell Arcade in 1976.
I also found information about the Curraheen Waterworks, the development of Fenit Harbour and the expansion of the Railway in which members of my family worked. I can see myself returning to this book again and again.

In August 1913, the Irish American Weekly published this announcement about Dr. Georgina Revington of Tralee.

The 1901 Census, gives a lovely snapshot of Georgina, aged 12 living with her father John and mother Emma Letitia, and her brother John and sister Elise, Princes Quay, Tralee. Georgina's governess was Elizabeth Edith Switzer. Also present was Kate Stack, their domestic servant who was from Barrons, Co. Kerry.
The Revington family were members of the Church of Ireland. John Revington and Emma Letitia White married in the Methodist Centenary Church in Stephen's Green, Dublin on Sept. 7 1886. John's father was Joseph Revington, a Merchant and Emma's father was John White, a Printer.
In 1910 Georgina Revington won the Large Gold Medal for Natural Science at Trinity College Dublin.
By 1911, the family had moved to Clonalour, Tralee and Georgina is recorded as a medical student at Trinity College, Dublin. Ethel Mary Warren of Kilkenny and Charlotte Anna Cheighton of Tyrone are also recorded as Business Apprentices.
In 1915, Dr. Georgina Revington married Guy Singleton Darling of Belfast, an Insurance Agent in St. John's (C of I) Tralee.
Sadly Guy Darling died in February of the following year, aged 29, in Lurgan. His father, Dr. J Singleton Darling was present at his death.

I would love to know if Dr. Revington was Tralee's first woman doctor? If you have further information about her please post in the comments box below.

Jeremiah Sullivan

Sooner or later every person with Kerry roots will find a connection to the family name Sullivan. Today is my day for it! Jeremiah Sullivan and Johanna Hanlon of Tonavane married in Tralee in 1840.
Church records gave me their children
Timothy 1841
 John 1843,
Mary 1845,
Patrick 1848,
Johanna 1852,
Catherine 1854

On the 9/2/1869 Timothy Sullivan married my great great grandfather James Dwyer's sister, Mary Dwyer born 1839. James & Mary were two of the children of Patrick O'Dwyer & Ellen Martin of Tonavane.
After their marriage in St. John's, RC, Tralee in 1869, Mary Dwyer & Timothy Sullivan went on to have
Patrick O'Sullivan 1870

Hannah Sullivan 1871 (mother recorded as Margaret?)
Jeremiah Sullivan 1874
Catherine Sullivan 1879
Timothy Sullivan 1886
In March
1901, Mary Dwyer Sullivan died of influenza. Her eldest son Patrick Sullivan was married to Catherine O'Donnell (Kate), dau of John O'Donnell, Rock St. Tralee 30/4/1893 and living with his father Timothy in Tonavane. Patrick & Kate's children, Mary age 7, Ellen age 5, Timothy age 4,  John age 2 & Patrick were also in the household.

If you are a descendant of Mary Dwyer and Timothy Sullivan, I would love to hear from you.

McGaley, Armagh, Dingle and Tralee

Picture
In Rath Graveyard, Tralee, yesterday, I found this headstone to a man from Armagh, Francis McGaley, a stonemason. I began to wonder what brought Frank so far from home.
His headstone gave clear information. Francis was known as Frank and he was originally from Jonesboro, Co. Armagh. His wife Mary Lynch was from Ballinassig, Dingle and their daughter Mary, known as Mollie died in 1919.
In the 1901 Census, Frank was a boarder at the home of Margaret Fitzgerald of Strand Street, Tralee. His wife Mary, was still living in John St., Dingle only this time she was recorded as a Publican. Present in the house are Thomas Lynch, Mary's brother, Mary's sons, John & Francis & daughter Mary McGailey, and Mary's daughter, Bridget Martin.
I wasn't able to find Frank's marriage to Mary until I discovered that Mary was the mother of Bridget Martin and the widow of Michael Martin of John St., Dingle.
Mary Martin married Francis McGEALY in Dingle on Nov. 23, 1890 . Her parents are recorded as Patrick Lynch & Ellen Murphy. His parents as John McGealy & Bridget McCarthy. (RC Church Record)

In 1901, Patrick Lynch was still living with his wife Ellen and family in Ballinasig, Dingle.
In 1911, Frank was living with his wife Mary, sons John and Francis and daughter Mary in Ratass, Tralee.
It is interesting that he is described as being born in Co. Louth in both returns even though his gravestone clearly states he was from Jonesboro, Co. Armagh..

John McGaley was born in John St., Dingle in 1891. John's baptism record reads John McGAILEY. Sponsors, Joseph Donovan & Johanna Kennedy.
Francis McGaley was born also in John St., Dingle in 1894. Frank senior is recorded as a shopkeeper. Francis baptismal record has Francis McGUILY as the spelling of his name. Sponsors, John Ryall & Bridget Stack.
There is a Mary McGINLEY of John St. baptised in Dingle on Mar 1, 1897 who looks like our Mary. Sponsors Maurice & Mary McDonnell.
Creative spelling at it's finest!

In 1921, Francis McGaley married Nora Mary Fitzgerald of Strand St., Tralee. He was an Excise Officer, resident in Westcliff on Sea, London.
In 1925, John McGaley married Mary Kerins of Castleisland. He was a Clerk and she was a Nurse. When his mother Mary McGaley died in 1942, John was recorded as present at her death.

I still don't know what exactly brought Frank McGaley to Dingle but he and Mary clearly made every effort to ensure that their children got a good education. Mollie's death in 1919 must have been a sore loss to them.

Flaxgrowers Ireland 1796

If your ancestors left County Kerry in the late 1700's or early 1800's it is useful to know that there was a  flax growing industry in Kerry.  We have a list compiled by the Irish Linen Board in 1796 that survives of people who were engaged in flax growing and your ancestor may be on it. Though Donegal and Tyrone have the highest number of flax growers, Kerry is also represented. The list includes the name of the Civil Parish or the Barony in which the grower lived.

Thomas Flaherty,Iowa

As I was researching another Flaherty family, I came across a marriage record for Thomas Flaherty and Honora Gaynor in Ballyheigue on July 23rd 1895.  Thomas' address is given as Black Hawk County, Iowa. As you can imagine, this was a very exciting find.  Honora's address is given as Glenderry.
churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/0eaaaf0518890

I couldn't leave this without searching further. So off I went to familysearch.ie and found the following
John Martin Flaherty born to Thos. Flaherty & Nora Gaynor Nov 23rd 1897 in Lincoln Township, Pocahonatas, Iowa

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XV8R-X51

According to the US Federal Census 1910, Thomas and Nora also had Lillian born c1901 and Marie born c1904.
familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MGMB-KM2

Edward Thomas Flaherty born July 9th 1913
familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XV8R-ZHF

The 1920 US Federal Census describes the family still living in Grant, Pocahontas, Ohio. Grant Township was established in 1870 and was named after President Ulysses S. Grant.
Thomas gave his immigration year as 1880 and Nora (Nona as per transcript) gave hers as 1895 (transcript says 1885) Thomas was a farmer.
They are both described as naturalised citizens so that is the next research step.

It seems likely that Thomas Flaherty died in 1945 and is buried in Calvary Cemetary, Pocahontas, Iowa.
