Stepney Scott 1816-1896 is buried in the grounds of Oak Grove Methodist, Screven County, Georgia. I came across his headstone in the lovely website Rural Churches of Georgia last year.
Once I had seen the pictures of the Church, I couldn't help but imagine Mr. Scott and his family worshipping with their neighbours on Sundays. It is no mean feat to raise a church so I imagine that the congregation were very proud of their achievement.
The Church was founded in 1876 under an arbour with five members. In 1982 the congregation had 122 members.
The earliest record I could find today was when Stepney Scott registered to vote Aug. 6 1867.
In 1870, Stepney Scott was living with Eliza Scott, age 45. Alonjo Scott age 14 and Emily Scott age 12.
By 1880 he was living with his nephew, Ben Scott age 16 and his grandchildren, Mary Baker, Camilla Baker, Hannah Baker, Alice Baker, Landers Baker & Fannie Baker.
In this Census, Stepney Scott's father was recorded as born in Africa.
One of his neighbours was William Elias who was also a member of Oak Grove Methodist.
I found a marriage for a Stepney Scott to a Hetty Pollack Jun 17 1880, Screven County. I do not know if this is the same man.
