In their testimony Milton Davidson, said that he had been enslaved by Daniel Griffith of Daviess County. In 1860 Daniel Griffith was the slaveholder of 7 people, one man age 34 (possibly Milton), one woman age 25, and 2 girls and 3 boys.
Caroline Davidson had been 'inherited ' by Mrs. Emma M Hunter from her father's estate.
In the Fall of 1861, Emma's husband, H A Hunter, had been appointed Chaplain to the 28th Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteers. In the 1870 US Federal Census, I found a Hiram Hunter with wife Emma living in Louisville, Ward 4, Jefferson County. Hiram was a Presbyterian Minister which makes me wonder if he is the H A Hunter, who became a Chaplain to the Kentucky Volunteers. The 1860 Census seems to imply that he is since he is again described as a Clergyman and is listed by the initials H A (Hunter).
In the 1860 Slave Schedule Emma Hunter is recorded as the slaveholder of a girl aged 1 and a boy aged 6. Could this be George?
On Aug. 12th, 1862, H A Hunter and his servant George, were captured at Gallatin, Tennessee.
George was missing until 1865, but was then ascertained to be held by Tillman Trammill in the town of Griffin, State of Georgia.
Mr. H A Hunter was acting as their agent, and Milton and Caroline requested that their son George be returned to them or to H A Hunter 'not with a view to enslave him but to liberate him and place him with his family.'
Statement made Oct. 14th, 1865 before N Crow Poler (sp?) Judge, Owensboro and John O'Brien, Clerk County Court, Owensboro.
In the 1870 Census, Milton Davidson, a farmer, is recorded with his wife Caroline and children, Martha, Louisa, Iris Ann, Mary, Daniel and Anna in Uppertown, Daviess, Kentucky.
Sadly, George was not resident with them. I wonder did he ever find his way home.
