Brennan family members sought in The Boston Pilot 1831-1921

As of today May 30th 2016, there are 579 returns for 'Brennan' online from the Boston Pilot Newspaper. The Boston Pilot was founded in 1829 by the Roman Catholic Bishop Benedict J. Fenwick. After many name changes it became The Boston Pilot in 1836 and simply The Pilot in 1858. The Pilot ran a column called Missing Friends from 1831-1921. This column is credited with increasing the circulation of the newspaper far beyond it's local area, with readers throughout America and also in Ireland and Australia. This source is of great interest to anyone with Irish ancestry since many of the records include townland and or parish names which can provide a bridge between Irish American families and their place of origin in Ireland.This online project is based on The Search for Missing Friends: Irish Immigrant Advertisements Placed in the Boston Pilot (New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston, 1989-1993), edited by Ruth-Ann M. Harris, Donald M. Jacobs, Dominique M. Pickett, and B. Emer O’Keeffe.

For example, in 1854, John Brennan placed a 'Missing Person' advertisement in the Boston Pilot. He was searching for his brother Luke Brennan, Parish of Cloontuskert, Co. Roscommon. Luke Brennan arrived in the States in 1839. The contact address is Newport, Rhode Island. The contact name is James Maine. On the same date John Brennan was also searching for his brother Patrick Brennan with the same arrival date as Luke.

Another example is Julia Moriarty who placed an advert in 1866, seeking her father Denis Breanen who had worked for many years in Indiana. Denis was originally from the townland of Dreenaulive in the Parish of Kilcrohane and the Poor Law Union of Cahersiveen, Co. Kerry. It can be useful to say the name of the townland aloud and make a note of other possible phonetic spellings of the name as you will find a range of spellings for Irish placenames. Another research options is a search of the U.S. Federal Census for either the missing person or the seeker or the contact person named on each advert.

John Brennan & Mary Fox... my 3x great grandparents?

As you all know I have been searching for some time for the parents of my great great grandfather Patrick Brennan. Patrick Brennan married Brigid Delamer(various spellings) in Newtowncashel,Co.Longford in 1850. Their witnesses were Patrick Tracy & Mary Keeny. As was common at the time, the parents of the bride and groom were not recorded. They lived out their lives on Clawinch Island, Co. Longford. By 1901, Patrick had died and Brigid was a widow living with her youngest son Thomas.
According to the oral history of my family, Patrick and his brother Luke who married Mary Delamer, a sister of Brigid, in 1859, (also in Newtowncashel) were born in the townland of Clooncraff, Co. Roscommon.

After an intensive month on rootsireland.ie, to my delight and amazement, I have found the following;
The children of John Brennan & Mary Fox;
Honor baptised 1823 Roman Catholic Parish of Roscommon (and Kilteevan)
Patrick 1826, as above
John 1827, as above
Luke 1830, as above
Michael 1834, as above
Catherine 1837, as above
This implies a potential date of birth of late 1700's or 1800 for John Brennan & Mary Fox and a potential marriage date of 1822

The dates and names match the oral history of my family. This is not proof of course. There is a mighty amount of work yet to be done. But early stage research into marriage and land records do not contradict the possibility that I am on the right track. It may be that existing paper records will not give me the confirmation I need. It may be that my Patrick and Luke Brennan's records simply do not survive and this is another family entirely. As with many Irish families it may be that only DNA tests will establish a clear link but at least now I have a possible lead that I can pursue.

In Griffith's Valuation (1857) there are 13 returns for John Brennan in the Civil Parish of Kilteevan.

This does not of course mean that there was 13 John Brennans who were tenants or landholders. It simply means that there was 13 parcels of land rented or owned by a man or men called John Brennan. Sometimes, the record differentiates between different people of the same name. But that is work for another day.

Owen Brennan of Clooncraff died March 19 1869. Age given 72. Status married. Occupation Farmer. Informant Bridget Brennan. No relationship recorded.
