Lucy Brannin, Franklin, Kentucky ?-1873

Lucy Brannin shows up in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census living in the William E. Fathertone household in Forks of Elkhorn, Franklin, Kentucky. Lucy is described as a Black woman born circa 1788 in Kentucky. The only other Black person in the household is Kate Lewis, a 30 year old woman also born in Kentucky.

The 1860 Slave Schedules show Wm. E. Featherston of Franklin, Kentucky with 7 enslaved people, 3 Males aged 40, 19 and 1.5yrs. and 4 Females, aged 37, 10, 7 and 4yrs. The University of Kentucky Libraries website give the following population for Franklin County, Kentucky;
1860 Slave Schedule

598 slave owners
2,553 Black slaves
834 Mulatto slaves
252 free Blacks
197 free Mulattoes

In 1873, the Kentucky Death Records 1852-1963 show a death recorded for a Black woman of Franklin, Kentucky called Lucy (no surname), who died after a 5 day illness, pneumonia. Lucy is described as married and aged 72.

In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census for the Featherston/Featherstone household of Forks of Elkhorn, Franklin; William has died and neither Lucy nor Kate are recorded.

The Irish Military Census 1922

We were all disappointed when the Irish Census 1926 did not come online this year for the Centenary of the 1916 Rising. However, there is another door open to us which is the Irish Military Census 1922, freely available on the Military Archives website. Since this is a Military Census, the next of kin is listed AND their place of residence. This provides a real treasure trove for a genealogy researcher.

There are 2 Brennan men listed for Kerry.
One of them is John Brennan of Gortakissane, Listowel, Co. Kerry who was single at the time of the Census and born c. 1903. John had the rank of Private. A search of the 1911 Census gives no return for Gortakissane but does give a return for Gortacrussane, DED Ennismore. It lists a John Brennan as the son of Catherine and the grandson of Patrick Brennan. The Civil Records Index (BMD) give 2 returns for the birth of John Brennan of Listowel in this time period. One lists the mother as Fitzberald, birth of John Nov. 15, 1903 and the other mother as Brennan, birth of John, Dec. 1, 1900.

The other soldier was Jeremiah Brennan, born c. 1903. rank Private of Caherdaniel, Cahersiveen. Baptism records show a Jeremiah Brennan born in Behehane, Caherdaniel and baptised Jan 13, 1903 (mother Mary Leary) and another Jeremiah Brennan of Ballydarrig baptised in Cahersiveen Jan. 7, 1902 (mother Mary Griffin)
The 1911 Census lists a Jerry Brennan age 8 of Behaghane (note the spelling has changed again!) with father Patrick, mother Mary and 7 siblings.
The spelling of Ballydarrig remains the same in the 1911 Census and there we find Feremiah age 9 with mother Mary, a widow, and 5 siblings.

Further research would be neccessary to identify the exact families of John Brennan and Jeremiah Brennan. If you have a photograph of either of these men or know more about their lives, we would love to hear it!

Brennan/Brannin/Branon Louisiana 1860

In the U.S. Slave Schedule of 1860, the following are listed as slaveowners;

E Brannin, Tensas (Parish) 9 men (Edward Brandon in 1850 Slave Scedule Tensas ?)
There were no Black voters in Tensas prior to 1964, at which time only 15 African Americans were permitted to register. This did not change until 1965 with the passing of the Voters Rights Bill.

J Brannin, Concordia, Eatern Louisiana, 5 women, 10 men
In the Federal Census of the same year J Brannin, Concordia, age 49, is recorded as an Overseer, living with R. E. Brannin age 28 (his wife?) and T.J. Brannin age 2 (his son?)

Brenan, New Orleans Ward 5, City Police Jail, 1 man
Ward 5 stretches from the Mississippi River through the city to Lake Ponchartrain made famous by Paul Brady in the song The Lakes of Pontchartrain.

M J Brennan, New Orleans Ward 3, 1 man
M J Brenon, New Orleans Ward 3, age 45, Grocer ?, born in Ireland, Ann Brennan age 24 & Francis Brenon age 25, also born in Ireland, Mary Brennan age 25 born in Pennsylvania, and John Barrel age 9 born in Penn.
Ward 3 includes Lafayette Square and most of the Central Business District of New Orleans.

R Brennan, Covington (St. Tammany Parish) 1 man, 1 woman
In the US Federal Census 1900, there is a Matilda Brennan born 1848 and her brother William born 1850 living in Covington. I wonder are they descendants of R Brennan?

Jane Branon, Livingston, 2 women, 3 men
In the US Federal Census of 1900, there is a Dabney Brannan born 1853, and wife Sarah L. living with their children, Julious age 9, Sarah L. age 7, James W. age 5, Ethel D. age 3 and Bruce B. age 1 in Livingston. I wonder if they are related to Jane Branon?

Brannan, Eatonton, Putnam, Georgia

The Thirteenth Ammendment was passed in the U.S. in 1865 bringing the Emancipation Proclaimation of 1863 into law. This makes the U.S. Federal Census of 1870 a very significant document for all those with African American cousins and ancestry. The 1870 Census is the first American Census which records the names of African American men, women and children.
The Brennan name has many variations, one of those is Brannan (although in some cases Brannan is a completely distinct name of it's own.)

I found the family of Henry Brannan in Eatonton, Putnam, Georgia in 1870
Henry Brannan 59 Hay Labourer born Maryland
Mary Brannan 54 Keeping House born Virginia
William Brannan 15 Bar Clerk born Georgia
Phillis Brannan 86 No Occupation born Virginia
It seems as if Henry's wife is Mary, their son is William and Phillis possibly a mother to one member of the couple.
The 1870 Census also notes each person's race.
Henry and Phillis are listed as Black and Mary and William as Mulatto.

There are a number of Brannan/Brannon/Branin families listed in Virginia in the 1860 U. S. Slave Scedules.

Mary Brannon, Clarke, Virginia
George Brannon, South District, Pittsylvania, Virginia
John Brannon, Lewis, Virginia
M Brannan. Richmond, Ward 2, Henrico, Virginia

Further research will be neccessary before it is possible to ascertain if there is a connection between the Brannan family of Eatonton, Putnam, Georgia and any of the Virginia Brannan/Brannon/Branin families. If you have research on the subject please comment below.

Timothy Brennan, Co. Kerry & Rhode Island

Timothy Brennan was born in Ireland on May 20th 1897 according to his wife Marion's U.S. passport application. He arrived in the U.S. in 1907 and lived in Providence, Rhode Island. He became a citizen in 1915 but according to the index he was born May 4th 1890. The index also gave me his place of birth as 'Kerry County, Ireland.' Timothy and Marion married on Nov. 9th 1916. According to the 1920 Census for Providence, Rhode Island, Timothy was a Police Officer. I was unable to find the name of Timothy's parents at this time.

Marion Brennan, pictured above, applied for a U.S. passport in order to visit her mother in 1923. Marion was born in Drumlish, Co. Longford in 1895. The Index of Rhode Island Marriages gives her maiden name as O'Hara.

John Joseph Brennan was born on April 10th 1889, in Rhue, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo, the son of Pat Brennan. John Joseph emigrated to the U.S. in 1910 and lived in Boston and Chicago. He became a citizen in 1919 and worked as a Locomotive Fireman. In 1920, John Joseph made an application for a passport stating the purpose of his visit to Ireland "to see my mother"

Michael Brennan Co. Kerry & Newport, Rhode Island

Michael Brennan born March 10th, 1872 in Co. Kerry, son of Michael Brennan emigrated to the U.S. in 1895. He became a naturalised citizen of the U.S. in 1902 in Newport, Rhode Island. Michael worked as a gardener. In 1922 he applied for a passport to visit his relatives in Co. Kerry.

Thomas Brennan, Queen's County, Ireland & Louisville, Kentucky

Thomas Brennan of Queen's County, Ireland arrived in the U.S. circa 1842 and lived for 72 years in Louisville, Kentucky. He died there Feb. 27 1914. His daughter May Bruce Brennan born June 28, 1878 later married William L. Washington and divorced in Brooklyn in 1921. May lived in New York at 19 West 31st Street in 1921.
