African American Brannon families 1870

 Whilst browsing the U. S Federal Census, I was interested to note a number of African American families with the surname Brannon or possible variants of the name. I tried to find 2 of the families in later Census and was unable to do so.  A number of experts in African American Genealogy, have found that directly after Emancipation many families continued to use the names of the people who had enslaved them. However, over time, at least some of the families chose different names. In the absence of a search for death records, this may explain why I was unable to find those families. 
It is interesting to note that the birth State that had the majority of African American people with the surname Brannon (or variants) was Virginia.
