He was the son of Louis G & Edna A Brennan. In 1930, the family were living in Rockford, Winnebago, Illinois. Both Louis George and Edna were born in Illinois. By 1940 Edna was widowed and she and Gaylord were lodging in the home of Herbert and Ada Cook in North Court Street, Rockford. A Draft Registration Card for George Louis Brennan 1918 suggests that Louis/George used both his first names interchangeably at different times in his life. His wife is named Edna and he is recorded as self-employed with a peanut vending machine business. George is recorded as 5 foot 10 & one eight inches tall, of stout build with blue eyes and sandy hair. Louis died on July 29, 1935 according to a transcription of the Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index 1916-1947. This record also tells us that Louis was born on Feb. 22 1880 in Shirland, Illinois. He was only 55 years at the time of his death. This record of Louis' place of birth gives us a great clue for checking the 1880 US Federal Census, if he was born prior to the census. Imagine my delight when I found Louie aged 3 months living with his parents Martn & Marccella Brennan. Martin was born in Wisconsin and Marcella in New York. All 4 of their parents were born in Ireland! The transcription of the Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index 1916-1947 came to my aid again giving me the death of Martin C Brennan (birthplace Footville, Wisconsin) on March 21 1933 in Rockford, Winnebago. Husband of Marsella. Martin's father was John Brennan and his mother Mary Cannon, both of whom were born in Ireland. Ian Eric Brennan was born May 17, 1918 the son of Alfred Eric and Jean Brennan, Farnborough, Kent. He was the younger of twin brothers at Dulwich College. He was in the Third XI and a prefect and having secured a Cutlers' Exhibition went abroad for a year. He studied German at Schwerin in Macklenburg with Herr Stroemer, with whom Mr. Macpherson had collaborated in certain school books. Returning from Germany in October 1936, he joined Messrs. Gellatly Hankey & Co., Ltd., Billiter Street, and after a year proceeded to their office in Hamburg, and later to Antwerp. On outbreak of war he returned to England at once and joined the R.A.F.V.R. He was awarded his wings in due course and commissioned on November 5, 1940. After further training he was posted to a Hurricane squadron in the Fighter Command, and met his death over the North Sea, eight miles east of the Shetlands, whilst on patrol, on March 1, 1941. Pilot Officer Ian Eric (“Doggie”[1]) BrennanPilot Officer Ian Eric Brennan of 3 Squadron RAF Volunteer Reserve was tragically killed whilst conducting dog fight training in his Hawker Hurricane on 1st March 1941. He was aged 22 years and 9 months when he was in collision with the Hurricane of Sgt Joyce. P/O Ian Eric Brennan flying Hurricane V7069 was the senior pilot that day, and Sgt Joyce in P3255 was the pupil hoping to gain some fighter tactic experience. Out off the Sumburgh Head a number of maneuvers had been carried out and all seem to go OK when suddenly the two aircraft collided and unable to recover P/O Brennan’s Hurricane plunged into the sea. The other Hurricane, severely damaged and with its pilot Sgt Joyce badly shaken up managed to limp back to Sumburgh where he got down safely, alas his instructor P/O Brennan, aged 22 from Farnborough, Kent, was killed and his body never recovered[2]. Panel 31 The 1911 Census gives us a wonderful picture of my Gilleran great and great great grandparents. My great grandparents, Michael Gilleran and Ellen Beirne and their five children were living with Michael's parents, John Gilleran and Anne Fox. John Gilleran of Roadwalk and Anne Fox of Clooncraff (age 18) married in Roscommon RC Church in 1872. The Civil registration record gives only their fathers' names but the Church marriage record transcription (rootsireland) records the following; Parents of John Gilleran, Patrick Gilleran and Mary Hanly Parents of Anne Fox, Michael Fox and Margaret Brennan . John Gilleran was baptised on Feb. 28 1845. His godparents were James Hambrogue and Margaret Brennan. Anne died in 1925 of old age (75 acc. to the Death Record) in the company of her daughter-in-law Ellen. Ellen Beirne Gilleran was the daughter of Malachy Beirne of Ballyglass, Rahara, Co. Both Dave and his wife could read and write though neither had attended school. Their home was rented and they both 'worked out' as farm labourers.
On June 16th, 1920, Dave and Mammie's lives were struck with immeasureable grief when their daughters Ethel and Edna died only 3 weeks after birth. There was no physician present at their deaths so there is no cause of death recorded. In their death certficates we discover that Mammie's name was Mary Martin and that she and Dave were born in Lexington County. Ethel and Edna were buried in St. Paul's Church on June 17th, 1920. The certificate does not identify if this was the Baptist Church or the Wesleyan Church. By 1940, the family had grown to include Dave Junior age 20, Wade age 18, James T age 10, Martha age 8, Mayole age 6 and Swanee, Dave's wife, age 17. Bailes and Sopha could not read or write. Bailes was a farmer. All the family were born in South Carolina. Campobello is derived from Italian meaning beautiful field. In the same year, 1870, a white man named Augustus Brannon (26) is farming land in Campobello. And another named Clements Brannon. It is possible that Bailes and Sopha worked for the Brannon family prior to emancipation.
In 1880, Campobello had a population of 99 people. The family of Bailes Brannon had grown by 1880 and included John A (Arch?) age 14, Ella (Milly?) age 11, Pinkney age 9, Mary age 7, Martha age 4 and mother-in-law Milly Brannon age 65. No-one in the family can read or write. Bailes and Sophia's parents were all born in South Carolina. Bailes and his son John A are described as farm labourers in this Census. The family were living in Spartanburg Township. Spartanburg is 22 miles from Campobello. In 1880, the town of Spartanburg had a population of 3,253. This must have been a huge change for the family, moving from a rural area into the county seat. I don't know what happened to the family after 1880. Maybe they migrated North? A first search through the marriage and death records for the children did not yield any likely matches. Neither could I find a death record in South Carolina for Milly, Sophia or Bailes Brannon. If you have found this family I would love to hear from you. Sources Original Census Records 1870 & 1880 at ancestry.com South Carolina Death Records originals at ancestry.com Wikipedia for local history of Campobello and Spartanburg I am often asked what do we do when we reach a brick wall in our Irish families about 1840/1850?
I have begun to explore a new option. (for me in anycase) We know that many Irish people began their journey to America and elsewhere via Liverpool. Some of them stayed in Liverpool, at least for a time. The 1851 Census for Liverpool (England), via ancestry, gives a total of 67,291 Irish born people living in Liverpool. The majority give no other birthplace but Ireland. However there are exceptions. For example in Paul Street, Liverpool, James Brennan, born about 1796, is recorded as having been born in Mayo, Ireland. James was a lodger in the house of Thomas King born about 1824 in Clare, Ireland. Thomas King's wife Irene was also born in Clare. Ann & John Portill, also born in Clare and described as relatives of Thomas King are also resident in the household. Of the 10 people living in the household, only one was born in England. In fact there are many Irish families resident in the area. I highly recommend a search for your missing family in the Liverpool Census of 1851 and 1861. Source ancestry, com Whilst browsing the U. S Federal Census, I was interested to note a number of African American families with the surname Brannon or possible variants of the name. I tried to find 2 of the families in later Census and was unable to do so. A number of experts in African American Genealogy, have found that directly after Emancipation many families continued to use the names of the people who had enslaved them. However, over time, at least some of the families chose different names. In the absence of a search for death records, this may explain why I was unable to find those families.
It is interesting to note that the birth State that had the majority of African American people with the surname Brannon (or variants) was Virginia.
